It’s been a while, hasn’t it?

After an eventful year, the stars are finally aligned for the return of MGR on Twitch and YouTube! Learning from the last two seasons, I am excited to return online to further our exploration of storytelling and narratology in video games, and interactive entertainment!

New OBS Interface and Chat !Commands

I am finalising the new OBS interface as I write this post, with the implentation of custom commands offering viewers opportunities to explore topics of interest as the stream unfolds.

Sample of chat responses to the !bg3 (Baldur's Gate 3) request.

These commands will share facts and anecdotes about the game at play, as well as definitons for topics related to storytelling and narratology (with over 350 entries for this subject). The format of each of these commands will be available in channel description in in-chat (such as !stroy and !bg3).

Visual Design

From a stylistic point of view, MGR has received a little make-over, but the core indentity and spirit of the brand remains the same. The use of a Own3D package gives me a descent headstart for scenes building and stinger transitions - the rest will be fine-tuned and adjusted as we go along. Each of the channel will have a colour accent for ease of indentification (Blue = MRG, Red= MGR Live, Purple = MGR LP).

Equipment

Gear-wise, I will be operating from an Alienware Aurora 16 with a Wave 3 mic, Stream Deck (15 keys), MK2 Facecam, and PS4. It's a nice little setup, and one that still remains in the low-to-mid range level of streaming equipment. Results are very encouraging, especially when it comes to streaming at 1080x1920/ 60 fps.

Live content will be dispatched by Restream on Twitch and Youtube, before heading to DaVinci for the edit of short segments (topics of 10–15 mins).

Regarding post-production, I am departing from Adobe to embrace free open-source alternatives - DaVinci seems to be well suited for my needs (at least for now).

Aims and Ambitions

The aim of this new season is to anchor a flexible pipeline around livestream production, and to feel a little more confortable about creating content on the fly.

The long-form podcast remains the core foundation of MGR (MattGoesRogue Live), serving as the basis for shorter topical edits (MattGoesRogue). In addition, a few extra Let’s Chat events will find their ways to the schedule to provide commentaries about industry updates as they happen.

The Let’s Play channel (MattGoesRogue LP) will feature the exploration of regular titles for deep-dive edits - starting with Baldur's Gate 3, as well as review-in-progress segments using the first few hours of gameplay on selected titles (variety games). These will mostly be open-world RPGs and story-focused games available on PC and PS console.

  • Live Let’s Chat (@MattGoesRogue – Twitch)
  • Edited short story segments (@MattGoesRogue – YouTube)
  • Live Let’s Play sessions (@MattGoesRogueLP – Twitch and YouTube)

Transcription and Derivatives

The livestream content will be transcripted in comprehensive articles, and session reports (similar to the AC Odyssey sessions). This part of the process is now a little easier thank to an OBS CC plug-in using a Google speech API.

Long form and short story segments also have the potential to be derived as podcast format (pretty much what MGR is in the first place), and might end up on Spotify and other suitable platforms in the future...

Website As A Hub

Finally, the website will operate as a hub to host and relay access to media, written content and more. I am really excited about exploring what Ghost has to offer and how the service can further contribute to positive experience of MGR online.

Social Media

Social media engagement is currently prioritised on Discord, Instagram, and BlueSky - all links are available here: https://linktr.ee/mattgoesrogue

Moving Forward...

Starting 16th September, MGR will return online with a variety of formats and contents. The definitive schedule is still TBC, but should be advertised on the website and socials shortly.
