007 First Light: The Bond Game of a Generation?
'007: First Light' holds the exciting promise of the origin story of the most iconic secret agent - retracing the steps of a seemingly impulsive low-tier field agent, into the sophisticated and calculated 007 we all know and love...
From the first glimpse of the 007: First Light trailer, it’s clear the new title of IO Interactive promises a new game era for the iconic British spy. For those of us who grew up with GoldenEye (1997), and have since enjoyed nearly 26 titles across platforms, it feels like a bold new beginning for the IP as a AAA game - and a unique opportunity to introduce the iconic character to new players.
007 First Light is a thrilling narrative action-adventure game developed and published by IO Interactive. Follow James Bond as a young, resourceful, and sometimes reckless recruit in MI6's training program, and discover an origin story of the world’s most famous spy.
Themes and Context
007: First Light holds the exciting promise of the origin story of the most iconic secret agent - retracing the steps of a seemingly impulsive low-tier field agent, into the sophisticated and calculated 007 we all know and love. This character arc gives IO Interactive (of Hitman fame) the perfect canvas to create a thrilling 3 part story, as hinted by the developer earlier this month.
With Amazon and MGM now running the IP (see screendaily article), there’s reason to hope for a modern yet faithful Bond to hit our gaming screens soon. Their recent game show experiment, 007: Road to a Million (featuring Brian Cox on Amazon Prime Video), proved that the studios understands the tone, scope, and charm of the franchise and successfully transfered it to new medium and format. All the ingredients were there to deliver two seasons of high-octane globetrotting adventures operating in the 007-universe - we can only hope the same level of care will be applied to this new interactive title.
It’s also worth noting that IO Interactive has been committed from the start to crafting an authentic vision of James Bond - one rooted in the works of Ian Fleming, rather than adapting the cinematic timeline. In line with the many IP reactivations (not reboots per say), 007: First Light will be set in modern days (2026) to feature a 26-year-old James Bond on his first mission in Her Majesty’s Secret Service.
Could it serve as a point of reference for future film inspirations, or even influence casting for the next actor to take up the mantle after Daniel Craig? It’s all speculative for now, but this feels like a way to introduce a younger Bond to a new audience.
Gameplay and Design
007: First Light invites players to portray a Bond who is both familiar and refreshingly new. All the iconic traits and behaviors you’d expect from 007 will be served with that Hitman signature design IO Interactive is known for. Expect flexible gameplay, intelligent NPCs, Q's gadgets, car races, social engineering, impressive set pieces, and replayability allowing players to explore multiple paths to complete their missions and objectives.
Narrative Speculations
A“Cinderella” story arc seems likely here. We may see a progression from a low-level operative into a skilled agent as part of the chase against rogue operative 006 - only to uncover a deeper conspiracy at the heart of the MI6 itself. This could culminate in a confrontation with a hidden mastermind, with Bond earning his matricule at the end of the 3rd act. There’s definitely a lot to play with here, so let’s hope the studios will been bold and will surprise us with unexpected twists and turns!
A Bond for a New Era
Much has changed since Ian Fleming’s Casino Royale (1953), and it stands to reason that a 26-year-old Bond living in 2026 would reflect the values of his time. Amazon Studios, MGM, and IO Interactive have a fantastic opportunity to redefine the masculine hero archetype through 007: First Light - starting by shedding some of the character's outdated traits like womanizing, machismo attitude, casual racism, and homophobia that were often present in earlier books and films. The same goes for behaviour like smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, which have fallen out of favor with younger generations. However, a modern Bond doesn’t need to be sanitized - but he can be evolved to meet the values of modern society and non-toxic gender representation.
Price Point
007: First Light "Standard Digital Edition" is priced at £59.99 - a high but increasingly common price point for titles of this calibre. The "Expert Edition" (physical only) offers an extra tuxedo skin for the same price, while "The Legacy Edition" is priced at a hefty £259.95 - this collector bundle includes a steelbook case, in-game skins, and a replica of the iconic golden gun (as seen in The Man With the Golden Gun and the GoldenEye video game). It’s undeniably stylish, but whether it's worth the cost will depend on how much of a 007 fan you are (and how much one can afford). Pre-order bonuses across all editions include 24-hour early access and additional skins for James and his gadgets.

Final Thoughts
007: First Light offers a promising future for the interactive branch of the Bond franchise - and one that seems to be in very good hands. Developped by a studio who has made a name for itself in a similar genre, this game could shine a light on Bond’s less known origin stories, while inviting a whole new generation of players to step into the shoes of the world’s most famous spy. I am looking forward to hearing about the annoucement schedule of IO Interactive, and to explore the game as part of MattGoesRogue LP next April!
